<\/figure>\n\n\n\nAt the start of the second stage of the St. Magnus Way, there is an iron age broch (pictured above) from around 400-100 BC. <\/p>\n\n\n\n This section of the walk follows the coast primarily, and started with a challenging scramble over uneven beach stones for a long time. At one point I made my way up into a nearby field, which turned out to be a bad idea since I then had to cross a couple of fences that I wasn’t supposed to and it was a bit dicey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I wasn’t sure that I’d complete the full stage in one day, since it was 20 km, with some difficult parts – I didn’t want to overdo it on my first full day of walking. But in the end, at the halfway point I just kept going. The later part of the walk was along the high cliffs, ending up along part of the section near Birsay that I had walked the day before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I started learning the Gloria this day, but didn’t finish memorizing it for another couple of days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Gloria al Dio, nell’alto dei cieli I very much appreciated the many excellent gates on this walk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I would like to come back earlier in the season to see the sea pinks in bloom everywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n As I finished the walk, the rain came. This is a very tired, but happy Lis. My wonderful host, Margaret, picked me up. I was very glad of a warm apartment and a hot shower! Since I had stepped in some boggy places and my shoes got wet, Margaret gave me a great tip: put the shoes on the towel warmer to dry. This was much needed for the rest of my pilgrimage.
