St. Magnus Way: Evie to Birsay
------------------------------

*In which Lis resumes her pilgrimage and visits an* *iron* *age* *broch*.

![](https://eskerhazy.ca/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/1000018023-1024x771.jpg)At the start of the second stage of the St. Magnus Way, there is an iron age broch (pictured above) from around 400-100 BC.

![](https://eskerhazy.ca/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/1000018026-1024x771.jpg)This section of the walk follows the coast primarily, and started with a challenging scramble over uneven beach stones for a long time. At one point I made my way up into a nearby field, which turned out to be a bad idea since I then had to cross a couple of fences that I wasn’t supposed to and it was a bit dicey.

![](https://eskerhazy.ca/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/1000018042-1024x771.jpg)I wasn’t sure that I’d complete the full stage in one day, since it was 20 km, with some difficult parts – I didn’t want to overdo it on my first full day of walking. But in the end, at the halfway point I just kept going. The later part of the walk was along the high cliffs, ending up along part of the section near Birsay that I had walked the day before.

![](https://eskerhazy.ca/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/1000018072-1024x771.jpg)I started learning the Gloria this day, but didn’t finish memorizing it for another couple of days.

![](https://eskerhazy.ca/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/1000018075-1-771x1024.jpg)*Gloria al Dio, nell’alto dei cieli
e pace in terra agli uomini di buona volontà.
Noi ti lodiamo, ti benediciamo,
ti adoriamo, ti glorifichiamo,
ti rendiamo grazie per la tua gloria immensa,
Signore Dio, Re del cielo, Dio Padre onnipotente.
Signore, Figlio unigenito, Gesù Cristo,
Signore Dio, Agnello di Dio, Figlio del Padre,
tu che togli i peccati del mondo, abbi pieà di noi;
tu che togli i peccati del mondo, accogli la nostra supplica;
tu che siedi alla destra del Padre, abbi pietà di noi.
Perché tu solo il Santo, tu solo il Signore, to solo l’Altissimo,
nella gloria di Dio Padre. Amen.*

![](https://eskerhazy.ca/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/1000018107-771x1024.jpg)I would like to come back earlier in the season to see the sea pinks in bloom everywhere.

![](https://eskerhazy.ca/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/1000018108-1024x771.jpg)As I finished the walk, the rain came. This is a very tired, but happy Lis. My wonderful host, Margaret, picked me up. I was very glad of a warm apartment and a hot shower! Since I had stepped in some boggy places and my shoes got wet, Margaret gave me a great tip: put the shoes on the towel warmer to dry. This was much needed for the rest of my pilgrimage. There was a lot of rain that week, and even when it was sunny, there were many muddy and boggy places that couldn’t be avoided.
